They say they do -- especially after performances like this. Peters stopped 21 shots in his third career shutout and the Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders 1-0 on Thursday night. Radek Dvorak scored a deflected goal in the first period to help the Hurricanes win their second straight following a five-game slide that coincided with a lower-body injury to starting goalie Cam Ward. Peters has allowed a total of one goal in those victories. "Hes given us an opportunity to win these last two games," coach Kirk Muller said. "Hes done his job. Wed like to say were going to score more than one or two goals, but you know what, theres nights you dont have to. Hes given us a confidence that we can just go out and play our game ... and play it the way we want to play it." Peters, making his sixth straight start, made one of his best saves in the final minute of the second period when he stopped a streaking Michael Grabner after a turnover. The Hurricanes blocked 13 shots, three by forward Tuomo Ruutu. Peters finished with the Hurricanes first shutout of the season and his first since blanking Washington last March 12. "I want to create confidence in the team. I have confidence in them, and Im just trying to build that confidence," Peters said. "Every day, we become more confident in each other because we trust each other, because were playing the right way. When we play the right way ... thats when we get rewarded." All six of Carolinas wins have come by one goal. "Games are tight and theres not a lot of room out there," Muller said. "We found a way to win." Backup Kevin Poulin made 23 saves in his second start in six days for the Islanders. They have lost two straight and four of six, and were shut out for the firstt time this season. Peyton Manning Broncos Jersey. "Its frustrating to sit here and not even get a point in that game when I felt we deserved a little better," coach Jack Capuano said, "but thats the way it goes." At the very least, their penalty-kill unit showed improvement. They shut down both of Carolinas power plays after giving up four goals with the man disadvantage in a 6-2 loss to the Capitals two nights earlier. The Hurricanes, who have made a habit of falling behind early, scored the first goal of a game for the first time since mid-October -- and needed a deflection to do it. "It was a little almost unusual we got that first one," forward Jordan Staal said. Poulin tried to clear the puck from behind the net but Ron Hainsey kept it in at the blue line, then threw it at the net and Dvorak tipped it in from the side of the net at 6:39. What turned out to be the games only goal also marked Carolinas first in a 5-on-5 situation since Oct. 25. In the four games in between, they scored four goals -- two on the power play, one with a sixth attacker and one in a 4-on-4 overtime to beat Philadelphia two nights earlier. Meanwhile, the Islanders gave themselves plenty of scoring chances but too few pucks on net: New York put just 12 shots on goal during the first two periods. "We gave him an opportunity to make that first save, and our D did a good job of blocking people out in front of the net and preventing those second and third rebounds," Muller said. Added Capuano: "Missed too many shots." NOTES: Hainsey has assists in two straight games -- his only two assists of the season. ... OAKLAND, Calif. Damarious Randall Packers Jersey . -- The plastic that was taped across the lockers in Oaklands clubhouse came down and the champagne that was on ice went back into the cooler. The Athletics will have to wait at least one more day before celebrating a playoff berth. A year after capturing the AL West with a dramatic win on the final day of the regular season, Oakland lowered its magic number to one for clinching a second straight division title, beating the Minnesota Twins 9-1 Saturday behind the pitching of Jarrod Parker and hitting of Alberto Callaspo. "Its something where we know weve got to take care of what we do, and if we win its going to take care of itself," said Parker, who allowed one run and four hits over six innings. "Right now we got to do what we do. We know its right there. If we handle what we do and we win games, its going to happen." The As were prepared just in case it happened Saturday. After Oaklands win, most of the team stayed in the clubhouse to watch the ending of the second-place Texas Rangers game against Kansas City. About 100 fans lingered in the stadium as well, viewing the game on Coliseums two big scoreboards. When the Rangers recorded the final out to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, the celebration was put on hold. Oakland can still clinch at home by beating Minnesota in the series finale on Sunday. "Its the best thing that can happen for any team, not just for us, to qualify in your home city," said As slugger Yoenis Cespedes, who hit his 26th home run of the season in the eighth inning. Callaspo also homered and matched his career high with four hits for Oakland. The As have won 12 of 15 and are 16 of their last 21, opening a season-high 7 1/2-game lead over second-place Texas entering Saturday. "Were swinging the bats well and adding on and hitting home runs and doing a lot of things that we continue to do," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "The timing for that seems to be pretty good." Parker (12-7), who may start the As post-season opener, gave up one run and four hits in six innings, allowed only two runners past first and didnt walk a batter for the fifth time this season. He gave up eight runs against the Los Angeles Angels on Sept. 16. Callaspo matched his career highs with four hits and had three RBIs. Kurt Suzuki also homered for the As, and Jed Lowrie had three hits. The game started after a two-hour rain delay. The visiting dugout was flooded and sewage backed up in the As coaches bathroom, the third such incident at the Coliseum this season. The infield was covered by a silver tarp before the game and workers repeatedly had to sweep big puddles of water away. Josmil Pinto homered for Minnesota, 1-5 on its trip. Twins starter Pedro Hernandez (3-2) gave up six runs and eight hits in two innings. "Any mistake you make right now they jump on you," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Its like piranhas with blood in the water. They add on and just keep swinging. Every time we made a mistake they just kill you. They are really getting after it." Callaspos two-out single in the first drove in Lowrie, and the As opened a 6-0 lead with a five-run second. Chris Young had a sacrifice fly, Cespedes a two-run single and Callaspo a two-run homer. Suzuki added a two-run homer in the sixth off Liam Hendricks and Cespedes hit 26th homer in the eighth. NOTES: Minnesota is 4-13 in its last 17 games. ... NEW YORK -- John Wall had the swipe, then the swat. Aaron Dobson Patriots Jersey . Add 21 points to Walls two big defensive plays on Deron Williams down the stretch, and the Washington Wizards won the point guard matchup -- and the game. The Wizards completed a New York sweep on Wednesday night, beating the Brooklyn Nets 113-107. Nene added 17 points in his return from injury for the Wizards, who had lost four in a row before beating the Knicks on Monday. "Coming on this trip to New York and over the bridge to Brooklyn, its huge," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "Its huge." Trevor Ariza and Bradley Beal each finished with 15 points for the Wizards, who got healthier during their stay in the Big Apple. Beal returned Monday after missing nine games with a stress injury to his right fibula and scored 21 points, and Nene was back Wednesday with 6-of-10 shooting off the bench after missing four games with right foot tendinitis. Paul Pierce had a season-high 27 points for the Nets, and Brook Lopez added 22 after missing two games with a sprained left ankle. Joe Johnson finished with 20. Pierce, who has been coming off the bench since returning from a broken right hand, made his first seven shots and finished 10 of 12. The Nets shot 53 per cent from the field, but the Wizards put seven players in double figures, made 12 3-pointers and outrebounded Brooklyn 51-31. "Its easy to sit here and talk to you guys about what kind of night I had, but bottom line, I really dont care. We lost the game. Thats pretty much all that matters," Pierce said. "We come out here and try to win as a team. Its not about how good Paul Pierce is scoring. Tonight we had the inability to rebound, we didnt defend the 3 and it cost us the game. Thats all that Im worried about right now." The Nets were chipping away at a 12-point deficit when Wall stopped their momentum with under 5 minutes left when he swiped the ball from Williams and went in alone for a layup to make it 99-93. Williams brought the Nets to 101-100 with a jumper, but Marcin Gortat tipped in a miss before Beals 3-pointer made it 106-100 with 1:08 to play. "We just stayed calm. We weathered the storm," Wall said. "We didnt get down even when they cut it to one. Came back down and made a big play." Nene then hit two free throws on Kevin Garnetts sixth foul for an eight-point advantage, but Williams scored four straight points. He was attacking the basket again after Martell Websters free throw gave Washington a 109-104 edge, but Wall blocked the shot, Webster made two free throws and the Wizards held on. "I just knew D-Wills been playing very well since he came back from his ankle injury and I know he can definitely shoot the ball from deep," Wall said. "He attacks the basket. Hes a very tough guard. I just wanted to be physical with him and try to disrupt his rhythm." Webster finished with 13 points and Gortat had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Wizards made seven of their first nine 3-point attempts and built a quick 11-point lead, but the Nets trailed only 30-28 after one. Washington went back up by 10 late in the half, but the Nets got the final four points to make it 59-53. Brooklyn shot 56 per cent in the first half, but Washington made up for that by going 9 of 12 from behind the arc. Williams had 15 points and 13 assists but shot just 5 of 13 from the field. Trevor Booker grabbed 13 rebounds for Washington, including nine on the offensive end. The Wizards had 19 offensive boards to five for Brooklyn. "That was it. Rebounding," Williams said. "Its been a couple of games that weve lost because of offensive rebounds. Its not just the bigs, its the guards. They shot a lot of 3s, a lot of long rebounds. So its on us, too, to get in there and rebound." NOTES: The Nets had a three-game home winning streak snapped. ... The move wasnt a surprise. Dressler, 28, was scheduled to become a free agent Feb. 15 and was exploring his NFL options. Dave Naylor of TSN Radio 1050 confirms Dressler has agreed to join the Kansas City Chiefs, the team he worked out with earlier this month, pending a physical. Riders assistant GM Jeremy ODay said that could happen very soon. "Weston and his agent were very up front they were going to go through the process and we were made aware of a possible situation coming up in the next couple of days where Weston was more than likely going to get an opportunity," ODay told reporters. "From our standpoint its tough to lose such a good player thats been here for a long time, is a leader in the locker-room. "But again, youuve got to feel happy for him that he gets that opportunity. Gerald Hodges Patriots Jersey. He hasnt gone through the process of being in the NFL and as any competitor you just want to see how you compare with the best available players. We wish him the best." The five-foot-eight, 179-pound native of Bismarck, N.D., has spent the past six seasons in Regina, having registered 442 catches for 6,531 yards and 43 TDs. He has surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving plateau five times in his career, including the last four years. Dressler had five catches for a game-high 81 yards and a touchdown in Saskatchewans 45-23 Grey Cup victory over Hamilton. Dressler is a two-time CFL all-star and was the leagues top rookie in 08. PHILADELPHIA -- Claude Giroux is excited about the way the Philadelphia Flyers are playing. Donnie Avery Chiefs Jersey . Wayne Simmonds had two goals and an assist to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Monday night, extending their home win streak to nine games. "We got the four lines rolling. Everybodys playing great," Giroux said. "I think when you have a team effort like tonight, its a really good feeling. We can take it in for a couple days for Christmas here, and be ready to go on the road." The Flyers brought their record back above .500 (17-16-4). Luke Schenn scored first for the Flyers, on the teams first shot of the night, giving them a lead they never lost. Scott Hartnells assist on that goal was the veteran Flyers 500th career point. "It was a big win, more importantly," Hartnell said. "Its kind of cool to hit a century mark, but we wanted to end into this Christmas break with a big win. Everybodys got a lot of smiles on our faces. That was an amazing effort and a big win. Its huge." Giroux had a goal and an assist, extending his scoring streak to eight games, a new high for the Flyers captain. While the Flyers will be using their three-day break to celebrate, the Wild will have plenty of time to consider whats gone wrong for them in recent days. Mondays loss was their third in a row, a stretch of games during which theyve scored only four goals and sank to fourth place in the Central Division. "Its a good time for the break," Kyle Brodziak said. "We need a few days to really find what we need to do, and what every guy in the room really needs to do, however we need to do it, to break out of whatever funk we are in right now." With the loss, the Wild are 1-7-1 in their last nine games on the road. They fell to 2-7-0 lifetime at the Wells Fargo Center. Theyve lost six of their last 10 games. Mikael Grandlund scored the Wilds lone marker in the first period, a power-play goal during a 1:40 two-man advantage that cut the Flyers lead to 2-1. But after that goal, scored late in the first period, the Wilds offence all but disappeared. The Wild travelled to Philadelphia after falling to the New York Rangers 4-1 Sunday. Back-to-back games can be difficult, and goaltender Niklas Backstrom started both. He, along with many teammates, seemed tired. Wild head coach Mike Yeo wasnt about to use fatigue as an excuse. "Im not going to paint a rosy picture and Im not going to make any excuses," Yeo said. "Flat out, we need to be better. Its every one of us. It starts with me. We have to be better. What I mean is, this is not us. Plain and simple, this is not us." Across the ice, however, the Flyers felt as if Mondays effort was perfectly representative of their team identity. They scored on the power play (Simmonds first-period goal), they kept their defence tight and they played hard right up until the final horn sounded. They feel theyve managed to turn around a dire start to their season. "No one wants to let anyone down in here -- turning the puck over, making soft plays," Hartnell said. "When youre accountable to your teammates, the guy next to you in the dressing room, you play hard, you play smarter. Weve got to eliminate some simple penalties that weve been taking lately, but its been a lot of fun here at home. Weve got to take this show on the road here." Both teams will return from the days off with games in Canada -- the Wild in Winnipeg, the Flyers in Edmonton. But only the Flyers will be riding the momentum of a complete-game victory. "We definitely needed that," Simmonds said. "You guys asked if we were worried, I said no. We know what were capable of." NOTES: Zach Parise missed the game with a lower-body injury. . GLENDALE, Ariz. Art Monk Redskins Jersey . -- The Buffalo Sabres have struggled at times this season when they had the lead, often fumbling it away. Against Phoenix, a team fighting for a playoff spot, they seemed to get better while out front, leaving the Coyotes steaming mad. Zemgus Girgensons scored a short-handed goal in the third period and had an assist, and the road-weary Sabres knocked off the Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night. "Sometimes when we have a lead, we panic a little bit," Sabres coach Ted Nolan said. "Tonight, we still panicked a bit, but not as much and it was good to see." The Sabres had plenty of energy in their third game in four nights, scoring the first goal and rallying from a 2-1 deficit in the third period. Tyler Ennis and Steve Ott scored, and Girgensons put Buffalo ahead with his goal early in the third. Ryan Miller kept the Sabres in it with a stellar first period and made some tough stops after giving up two quick goals in the second, finishing with 38 saves in Buffalos second win in 10 games. "Hes done a tremendous job for us," Girgensons said. Phoenix followed one of its best games of the season with a shaky performance. The Coyotes dominated most of the first period, only to give up the first goal, and then blew a 2-1 lead by repeatedly turning the puck over in the second period. They tried to rally with a late push, but came up short in what they had deemed a must-win game. Antoine Vermette scored his fifth goal in three games to extend his point streak to six games, and David Moss scored his first goal in 17 games for the Coyotes. "Were up 2-1 at the start of the second and do absolutely nothing -- NOTHING as a group," said red-faced Coyotes captain Shane Doan. "We had a chance to put a team away when youre up 2-1 at home, I dont think we got a shot for 12 minutes, its embarrassing. Its embarrassing." Phoenix played perhaps its best game at a critical juncture of the season on Tuesday, kicking off a five-game homestand with a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings behind Thomas Greiss second shutout in three starts. Coming off a game like that, the Coyotes needed to avoid a slipup against the NHLs worst team. The Sabres began the day with an NHL-low 14 wins and 36 points -- six fewer than anyone else -- and had allowed 31 goals while losing eight of nine. Buffalo also came in as the NHLs lowest-scoring team with 101 goals, which was 23 fewer than the next closest team. The Coyotes had added incentive after losing to Buffalo in overtime on Dec. 23, when a shot by defenceman Mark Pysyk caromed into the pants of Phoenix goalie Mike Smith, who fell back into the net for the deciding goal. Despite being outshot 21-12 in the first period, the Sabres scored first by getting traffic in front of Greiss, leading to Ennis 12th goal of the season on a rebound. The Coyotes quickly snapped out of their funk. Vermette scored his team-leading 20th goal of the season on a power play, one-timing a rebound past Miller. Moss scored 18 seconds later, swiping in a backhander on another rebound. But Buffalo fought right back. Ott tied it in the second period on a power play, punching a rebound under Greiss arm as he dove, the first allowed by Phoenix after 14 straight penalty kills. Girgensons put the Sabres up early in the third period with the Coyotes on the power play, poking the puck away from Coyotes defenceman Keith Yandle and past Greiss in the same motion. Buffalo held on behind some big saves by Miller in the closing minutes, sweeping the season series over Phoenix. "They were playing with a lot of juice and when you keep turning the puck over, it makes it hard on you," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "It made it hard on us and we kept turning the puck over until they won the game." The St. Louis Cardinals are confident there is more to come, too. Carpenter broke Stan Musials team record for doubles by a left-handed batter in a season as the Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 Saturday night to maintain a two-game lead in the NL Central. Carpenters fifth-inning double was his 54th one more than Musials total in 1953. Carpenter went into the game aware he was tied with Stan the Man. "To know that you have done something, took a record from (Musial) or broke a record that he held, you cant put it into words," Carpenter said. "It is pretty amazing. It is something I am extremely proud of and definitely a cool thing." Carpenter grounded out to start of the game and flied out in the second. But with two outs in the fifth, he hit a shot into the right-field corner to set the mark. "Someone had mentioned to me that I tied him last night, so when I hit it today, I knew," Carpenter said. "I got the ball and I got the base, so pretty cool." Despite his personal success, Carpenter and the Cardinals know they have more to do. "The only thing on my mind is the division championship," he said. "If I can do my job to help us win, then all those individual things will take care of themselves. The Cardinals lead Pittsburgh by two games and are ahead of Cincinnati by three games. St. Louis won for the 12th time in 17 games and improved to 14-4 against the Brewers this year, including 8-1 in Milwaukee. He had a rough first inning, but after that nothing bothered him. "He was struggling a little bit," Matheny said. "Once he found that groove, and you could tell found that four-seamer, it was a completely different game." Yovani Gallardo (11-10) gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings and dropped to 1-11 with a 6.46 ERA in 17 career starts against St. Louis. Matt Adams hit a two-run homer for the second straight night, putting the Cardinals ahead in the first. Davis hit an RBI grounder in the bottom half, but the Cardinals blew open the game in a five-run eighth. "He hits mistakes," Gallardo said. "Hes one of those guys that got a lot of power. It doesnt take much for him to hit the ball hard somewhere." BARCELONA, Spain -- Diego Costa scored his 15th goal of the Spanish league season to seal Atletico Madrids 2-0 win at Elche on Saturday, provisionally lifting Diego Simeones side level with Barcelona at the top of the table. Al Woods Titans Jersey . Celta Vigo came back to beat Almeria 3-1 for its first home victory at Balaidos Stadium in eight attempts this season under first-year manager Luis Enrique. Diego Costa fired in substitute Adrian Lopezs chipped throughball to secure the three points in the 74th after Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion had opened the scoring in the 63rd. Diego Costa is the leagues second leading scorer through 15 rounds behind injured Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo with 17 goals. With Elche hanging tough in defence, Simeone sent on Raul Garcia and Lopez and the changes paid off to earn Atleticos 17th win in all competitions to go with four draws and just one loss. Atletico broke through seconds after Raul Garcia replaced David Villa. Koke pounced on a rebound from Garcias shot that Manuel Herrera had saved but failed to clear, leaving the Elche goalkeeper strewn on the turf with defender Alberto Botia and Diego Costa after they collided. Diego Costa then ran onto Lopezs delicately placed lob to fire by Herrera from the right side of the area and secure the three points. "The entrance of Raul Garcia and Adrian (Lopez) gave us two bursts of creativity when the game had gotten bogged down," Simeone said. "We have to keep going forward this way and remain realistic. I know its a good moment for Atleticos fans, but we are focusing on one game at a time." Later on Saturday, third-place Madrid hosts Valladolid, looking to close its six-point gap with its two title rivals, while Real Sociedad visits Espanyol. Barcelona can reclaim sole possession of the league lead when it plays at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Celtas much-needed win lifted it three points from the relegation zone, while Almeria stayed among the bottom three. Jesus "Suso" Fernandez, on loan from Liverpool, cut back from the right side before unleashing a left-footed shot to give Almeria the lead nine minutes in. But the hosts dominated the rest of the way. Fabian Orellano equalized from long range in the 26th before the midfielder headed on a corner for Borja Oubina to tap in at the far post in the 49th. Celta striker Charles, who had gone close several times including a header off the crossbar, got his deserved goal in the 59th when he sliced Hugo Mallos low cross off Almeria goalkeeper Esteban Suarez and over the line. It was a brave decision from Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie, but it worked to perfection. Johnny Jolly Packers Jersey . Rennies decision to leave the clubs leading scorer Camilo out of the lineup for Saturdays match at Montreal was a major talking point leading into the all-Canadian matchup, but the Scottish coach got the outcome he had been hoping for. Camilo was left out in favour of Tommy Heinemann, a big, strong, bustling forward. Speaking to Rennie ahead of the game he explained his decision was made largely due to the opposition. He wanted Heinemann on from the start to use his physical attributes against Montreals backline, and he planned to unleash Camilo late in the game when the Impact defence had been worn down. It worked a treat. The Whitecaps ended up beating Montreal 3-0 and giving a major boost to their fading playoff hopes. It was a third road win of the season and a second clean sheet in a row. There were plenty of nervous moments along the way, and some controversy as well, but the end result was probably better than Rennie had even dared dream about. Heinemanns inclusion had the desired effect early in the game, making a nuisance of himself around the Impacts central defensive pairing of Alessandro Nesta and Matteo Ferrari, and the Whitecaps early breakthrough came from the penalty spot as Kenny Miller scored to give them a seventh-minute lead. There was no doubt about the decision from referee Jorge Gonzalez who penalized Impact defender Hassoun Camara for a handball. That opportunity was created following a strong run down the right by Nigel Reo-Coker who had an excellent first half for Vancouver. The Impact had plenty of chances to equalize, hit the bar a couple of times, and had it not been for a string of good saves by Whitecaps Danish goalkeeper David Ousted, Montreal would have been back in the match. However, as they pushed forward looking for a leveling goal late in the game, Camilo came off the bench to score two in two minutes  – including a wonderstrike – to seal the points for the Caps. Its now 16 goals for the season for the Brazilian who sits two behind Montreals Marco Di Vaio for the league lead in scoring. The Impact will also point to an incident just before half time as a major turning point in the match. With the Whitecaps leading 1-0, referee Gonzalez awarded a penalty to Montreal following a long range strike by Patrice Bernier that struck Whitecaps midfielder Jun Marques Davidson around the top of the arm. Gonzalez then changed his mind following consultation with the other officials – although they were standing at halfway. It was a decision that Impact coach Marco Schallibaum called "a scandal," and Impact President Joey Saputo complained on Twitter: "PK or not, how does the furthest official on the field, overturn a referees call?" Saputo has a point. It was a situation that caused massive frustration because the referee was on the spot, made the call, and then seemed to changed his mind based on advice given by people much further away from the incident. However, even with the benefit of replays in the broadcast booth, it was very difficult for us to make a definitive call about whether it should have been a penalty. If the officials are not certain, they shouldnt give a spot kick. The result in Montreal leaves the Whitecaps in a much more positive position as they head home for back-to-back games against Real Salt Lake and Portland Timbers. The playoffs are still a long shot – that was only Vancouvers second win in 10 matches – but at least they are still alive. A win at home to RSL next Saturday (7pm et/4pm pt on TSN2) would see them climb to within one point of fifth-placed Colorado with four games remaining, two of which are against the Denver club. For the Impact, it was a concerning week. Despite playing well for periods in all three of their matches, they ended up with three defeats in a row (Two MLS, one Champions League) conceding eight goals in the process. By the end of the weekend, the Impact had fallen six points behind Eastern Conference leaders New York. Montreal are still third in the standings, but they are now just two points ahead of fourth-placed Houston Dynamo, and with an aging squad the Impact know the importance of finishing in the top three and avoiding the additional fourth vs. fifth match to open the playoffs. With back-to-back road games on the way against Chicago and Houston, Schallibaum will be hoping his team can tighten up defensively, whilst also showing a more clinical touch in front of goal. Damarious Randall Packers Jersey . Still, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke thought taking him out before the fifth inning was an unusual move. Hoyer is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery on Friday, and Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said he hopes the QB will be able to return for practice next spring. Hoyer had his torn right anterior cruciate ligament repaired at the Cleveland Clinic. The 28-year-old sustained the season-ending injury on Oct. 3 against Buffalo in the first quarter of his third start. It was a devastating blow to the Cleveland native who had led his hometown Browns to two straight wins while replacing injured starter Brandon Weeden. "Were hopeful in the spring that well see him," Chudzinski said following practice as the Browns got ready for Sundays game in Green Bay. "From my understanding, everything went well with the surgery. Just knowing him, from a rehab standpoint, I know hes going to do everything he can to get ready." Its been quite a few days for Hoyer. In addition to the operation, he celebrated a birthday and he and his wife, Lauren, welcomed their second child, a daughter named Cameron. Hoyers storybook start to the season ended when he got hurt on an awkward slide at the end of an 11-yard scramble against the Bills. Hoyers right cleat got caught underneath him as he slid, and he was hit as he hit the turf from the side by Bills rookie linebacker Kiko Alonso. Before he was injured, Hoyer had energized the Browns, who had their three-game winning streak stopped Sunday by Detroit. Hoyer, who spent three seasons as Tom Bradys backup in New England and had been cut by three teams in 11 months, took over for Weeden and guided the Browns to wins over Minnesota and Cincinnati. He threw go-ahead touchdown passes in the fourth quarter of both games. "He did a great job coming in and gave us a real sspark," Chudzinski said. Demetri Goodson Packers Jersey. "He played very well. You saw improvement every game that he played, and he was able to make plays for us and really help us in that stretch to get us going." Hoyers performance may not prevent the Browns from drafting a quarterback in next years draft, but it did show that he can be an option in the event they need a QB or if Weeden continues to struggle. The Browns made some other roster moves on Friday, placing rookie defensive back Josh Aubrey on injured reserve and waiving running back Bobby Rainey. Chudzinski said Aubrey sprained his knee and ankle in practice Thursday. He appeared in six games this season on special teams. In the win over the Vikings, Aubrey ran for 34 yards on a faked punt, a key play in Clevelands win. Also, the club promoted wide receiver Tori Gurley and cornerback Julian Posey from their practice squad to the active roster. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Gurley played in the Browns first two games and made one catch for 15 yards. ---- NOTES: RB Willis McGahee practiced after sitting out Thursday to rest his surgically repaired knees. OLB Jabaal Sheard said hes eager to return this week after missing three games with a sprained left knee. ... Chudzinski said Weeden had an excellent week of practice as he tried to shake off an inexcusable interception last week in a loss to Detroit. "I thought hes had his best couple of days of practice here: very focused and receptive to the coaching," Chudzinski said. BOSTON -- The old ballpark was packed for a celebration nearly a century in the making. Artie Burns Steelers Jersey . Players danced around the infield with their families. Fans remained in the stands, savoring a long-awaited moment generations of New Englanders had never been able to witness. Turmoil to triumph. Worst to first. A clincher at Fenway Park. David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox, baseballs bearded wonders, capped their remarkable turnaround by beating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6 on Wednesday night to win their third World Series championship in 10 seasons. When it was over, Ortiz took a microphone on the field and addressed the city, just as he did a week after the marathon bombings last April. "This is for you, Boston. You guys deserve it," the Series MVP said. "Weve been through a lot this year and this is for all of you and all those families who struggled." And the Red Sox didnt even have to fly the trophy home. For the first time since Babe Ruths team back in 1918, Boston won the title at Fenway. The 101-year-old stadium, oldest in the majors, was packed with 38,447 singing, shouting fans anticipating a party building for more than nine decades. "Maybe they wont have to go another 95 years," said John Farrell, a champion in his first season as Bostons manager. Shane Victorino, symbolic of these resilient Sox, returned from a stiff back and got Boston rolling with a three-run double off the Green Monster against rookie sensation Michael Wacha. Pumped with emotion, Victorino pounded his chest with both fists three times. John Lackey became the first pitcher to start and win a Series clincher for two different teams, allowing one run over 6 2-3 innings 11 years after his Game 7 victory as an Angels rookie in 2002. With fans roaring on every pitch and cameras flashing, Koji Uehara struck out Matt Carpenter for the final out. The Japanese pitcher jumped into the arms of catcher David Ross while Red Sox players rushed from the dugout and bullpen as the Boston theme "Dirty Water" played on the public-address system. There wasnt the "Cowboy Up!" comeback charm of "The Idiots" from 2004, who swept St. Louis to end an 86-year title drought. There wasnt that cool efficiency of the 2007 team that swept Colorado. This time, they were Boston Strong -- playing for a city shaken by tragedy. "Weve dealt with a lot," Dustin Pedroia said. "But our team came together." After a late-season collapse in 2011, the embarrassing revelations of a chicken-and-beer clubhouse culture that contributed to the ouster of manager Terry Francona, and the daily tumult of Bobby Valentines one-year flop, these Red Sox grew on fans. Just like the long whiskers on the players faces, starting with Gomes scruffy spring training beard. "As soon as we went to Fort Myers, the movies already been written," Gomes said. "All we had to do was press play, and this is what happened." The only player remaining from the 2004 champs, Ortiz had himself a Ruthian World Series. He batted .688 (11 for 16) with two homers, six RBIs and eight walks -- including four in the finale -- for a .760 on-base percentage in 25 plate appearances, the second-highest in Series history. "We have a lot of players with heart. We probably dont have the talent that we had in 07 and 04, but we have guys that are capable (of staying) focused and do the little things," Ortiz said. Even slumping Stephen Drew delivered a big hit in Game 6, sending Wachas first pitch of the fourth into the right-centre bullpen for a 4-0 lead. By the time the inning was over, RBI singles by Mike Napoli and Victorino had made it 6-0, and the Red Sox were on their way. "Hey, I missed two games. Its time to shine," Victorino said. All over New England, from Connecticuts Housatonic River up to the Aroostook in Maine, Bostons eighth championship can be remembered for the beard-yanking bonding. Fans bid up the average ticket price to over $1,000 on the resale market and some prime locations went for more than $10,000 each. Nearly all the Red Sox rooters stood in place for 30 minutes after the final out to view the presentation of the trophy and MVP award. A few thousand remained when a beaming Ortiz came back on the field with his son 75 minutes after the final out. "It was an awesome atmosphere here," Lackey said. The win capped an emotional season for the Red Sox, one heavy with the memory of the events that unfolded on Patriots Day, when three people were killed and more than 260 wounded in bombing attacks at the Boston Marathon. The Red Sox wore "Boston Strong" logos on their left sleeves, erected a large emblem on the Green Monster and moved the logo into the centre-field grass as a constant reminder. "Theres I think a civil responsibility that we have wearing this uniform, particularly here in Boston," Farrell said. "And it became a connection initially, the way our guys reached out to individuals or to hospital visits. And it continued to build throughout the course of the season. I think our fans, they got to a point where they appreciated the way we played the game, how they cared for one another. And in return they gave these guys an incredible amount of energy to thrive on in this ballpark." Red, white and blue fireworks fired over the ballpark as Commissioner Bud Selig presented the World Series trophy to Red Sox owners John Henry, Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino, leaving a haze over the field. "When the fireworks went off at the presentation of the trophy out there, when the ballpark was filled with smoke, it was completely surreal," Farrell said. "To be in this position, given where weve come from, reflecting back a year ago at this time, theres been a lot thats happened in 13 months." Players then put on goggles for a champagne celebration in the cramped clubhouse. "They just found ways to win," Henry said. "At some point you have to think theres something special happening here." Among the players blamed for the indifferent culture at the end of the Francona years, Lackey took the mound two days shy of the second anniversary of his elbow surgery and got his first Series win since the 2002 clincher. He pitched shutout ball into the seventh, when Carlos Beltrans RBI single ended the Cardinals slump with runners in scoring position at 0 for 14. Junichi Tazawa came in with the bases loaded and retired Allen Craig on an inning-ending grounder to first. Brandon Workman followed in the eighth and Uehara finished. St. Louis had been seeking its second title in three seasons, but the Cardinals sputtered after arriving in Boston late Tuesday following a seven-hour flight delay caused by mechanical problems. Symbolic of the teams struggles, reliever Trevor Rosenthal tripped while throwing a pitch to Ortiz in the eighth, balking Pedroia to second. "They were some frustrated guys in there, but overall you cant ask us to go about any better than how our guys did," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Not too many people expected us to do what we did." Wacha entered 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his post-season career but gave up six runs, five hits and four walks in 3 2-3 innings, the shortest start of the 22-year-olds big league career. "I just made too many mistakes," he said. "It doesnt matter how hard youre throwing if you cant locate it." Boston was a 30-1 underdog to win the World Series last winter but joined the 1991 Minnesota Twins as the only teams to win titles one season after finishing in last place. Now, the Red Sox will raise another championship flag before their home opener next season April 4 against Milwaukee. Boston hit just .211, the lowest average for a Series champion in 39 years and 13 points lower than the Cardinals. But after falling behind 2-1 in the Series on the first-game ending obstruction call in post-season history, the Red Sox tied it the following night on the first-game ending pickoff in post-season play. That sparked the Red Sox to three straight wins and another title. "When we started rolling," Ortiz said, "nobody ever stopped the train." NOTES: Boston also won the Series at Fenway Park in 1912.
