Tottenham Hotspur will leave Australia winless after succumbing to an Atletico Madrid sucker punch in their International Champions Cup meeting on Friday night, losing 1-0 to Diego Simeones side. Antowain Smith Jersey .The Premier League side hit the woodwork twice and forced Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak to work all night in a vastly improved display to their 2-1 midweek loss to Juventus.Diego Godin scored a first-half winner for Atletico, executing their much-honed gameplan; soak up the pressure and strike. The Uruguayan centre-back was on hand to tap in Gabis dinked set piece when Tottenham youngster Anton Walkes played him onside with an unfortunate header. With the start of the Premier League just a fortnight away, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino will benefit greatly from the injection of his first-choice defence, who were spared the trip to Melbourne. The Argentinian would have been pleased with signs of life in attack; especially a blossoming partnership between Erik Lamela and recent arrival Vincent Janssen.Janssen was the chief beneficiary of Spurs more lively showing, perhaps because of Lamelas promotion to the starting eleven. The pair traded passes and appeared tuned-in to each other, no more so than a 21st minute move that led to Lamela striking the post.Josh Onomah could also have put Tottenham ahead, lashing the crossbar form a volley when Atletico fluffled their defensive lines. As halftime loomed, Spurs fell asleep and Godin pounced. The veteran snuck a glance at the linesman before celebrating with teammates.A more open second-half brought chances at both ends.Oblak showed his quality to deny Spurs twice in two minutes; the first from a rasping Ryan Mason half-volley, and the second from Janssens free kick. The Slovenian glovemans reflexes and reach were put to the test spectacularly in front of the 42,107-strong MCG crowd. But the 23-year-old showed why he deserves the gloves at one of the biggest clubs in the world each time.Up front, Rojiblancos striker Fernando Torres showed his class, drawing and deceiving Spurs defenders all night.Substitute Amath Diedhiou twice went close as the minutes ticked down, but one would be enough for Atletico. They will play Melbourne Victory in another friendly at Geelongs Simonds Stadium on Sunday. Ty Law Jersey . Pirlo limped out of Sundays 1-0 win over Udinese after just 13 minutes. Juventus says Pirlo underwent tests on Monday which revealed he has "a second-degree lesion to the collateral medial ligament in his right knee. Authentic Custom Patriots Jersey . The Redskins announced Monday that the quarterback who led the team to the Super Bowl championship in the 1987 season will serve as a personnel executive. .C. -- When North Carolina freshman Ryan Switzer reported to training camp in August he was a little miffed to learn he was third on the depth chart at punt returner. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Riding a four-game losing streak, all Illinois coach Lovie Smith wanted was for a couple of his players to make some big plays.Halfback Kendrick Foster did it early, Darius Mosely came through late and the Illini defense stepped up all game in forcing five turnovers in a 24-7 win over mistake-prone Rutgers 24-7 Saturday. We feel good about winning the football game, yes, Smith said. About this one game. You have to celebrate every game to feel good about it. Sense of relief? Yeah. You can give it a few different descriptions. There definitely was a lot of excitement. Theres nothing like seeing a locker room after a big win and thats what we had today.Foster, who rushed for 108 yards on 21 carries, ran 5 yards for a touchdown and caught a 5-yard scoring pass from first-time starter Chayce Crouch in helping the Fighting Illini (2-4, 1-2 Big Ten) win for the first time since the season opener. The Illini defense forced five turnovers, recovering four fumbles and getting the game-clinching, fourth-quarter 75-yard interception return for a touchdown from Mosely, who also had a fumble recovery. We started him for the first time at the nickel position and that was probably the play of the game, that long interception return, Smith said. ... Times like when you have a four game losing streak going you need someone to elevate their game. He did.Gio Rescigno, who replaced Chris Laviano at the start of the second half, threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Nick Arcidiacono on the first play of the fourth quarter to snap an 11-quarter scoring drought and get Rutgers (2-5, 0-4) within 17-7.It wasnt enough to prevent the Scarlet Knights from losing their fourth straight game.Rescigno had Rutgers at the Illini 25 with a first down on the next series, but Mosely intercepted his short pass to the left side. The clincher came after play was delayed a couple of minutes foor an injury Scarlet Knights lineman J. Mike Haynes Jersey. .J. Denman. It didnt work out the way we thought it would, but it happens, Rescigno said. You have to get over it and move on to the next play. The first half was dominated by mistakes. After having his first-quarter TD run following a muffed punt nullified by a holding penalty, Crouch threw an interception in the end zone.Laviano (7 of 12 for 62 yards) and halfback Robert Martin both lost fumbles in Illinois territory. The low point for the Scarlet Knights might have been seeing Laviano and Rescigno mishandle snaps in the shotgun formation on fourth-down plays. You get five turnovers in a game and really you have no chance to win a football game, Rutgers coach Chris Ash said. Thats what it came down to. I thought we did a lot of good things on both sides of the ball. We ran the ball better. We threw the -- at times threw the ball better today. Had a little energy going. And every time we were in critical situations, shot ourselves in the foot.TAKEAWAYIllinois: Crouch played well, starting for the injured Wes Lunt. He was 6 of 14 for 92 yards and ran 11 times for 25. Lunt missed the game with a back injury sustained last week.Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights are clearly the worst team in the conference. Rescigno, who was 10 of 18 for 120 yards, clearly earned the right to start next week although Ash said it would be quarterback competition this week.NUMBERS: Rutgers outgained Illinois 385-320 in total yards and had the ball for almost 33 minutes. The Scarlet Knights were 9 of 16 on third-down attempts. Illinois was 4 of 13.UP NEXTIllinois: The Illini travel to No. 4 Michigan next Saturday.Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights are at Minnesota next Saturday.---AP College Football: ' ' '

Eddie Jones side face Fiji at Twickenham on Saturday, live on Sky Sports, looking to build on their impressive 37-21 victory over South Africa last weekend. The England head coach is waiting on the results of fitness tests undergone by Billy Vunipola, Nathan Hughes and Elliot Daly before naming his starting XV, although Hartley revealed he knows who is likely to get the nod. I know the team and the guys know the team, roughly. We have trained well today, prepared well, we have one more day to go but we are looking forward to it, he told Sky Sports News HQ.There have been much documented injuries to the second row but we have seen Courtney Lawes and Joe Launchbury come back and do a fantastic job for us. Eddie Jones explains why he will not be introducing curfews for Englands rugby players following Wayne Rooneys apology for his behaviour on the weekend. Whoever plays, I am sure they will do a great job.Jones enigmatically suggested during his news conference Fiji want a Cava party, we dont. England rugby head coach Eddie Jones delays naming the side to play Fiji on Saturday because of injury concerns. As for team discipline - an issue in top-level sport after pictures emerged of England football captain Wayne Rooney at a fellow guests wedding at the team hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning - Hartley explained how they approach the matter. The guys are all adults and we come back here [to the hotel] as a team afterwards. We have got recovery on a Sunday and we have another big game to prepare for, he said.We let the guys make their own decisions. As soon as we need to start making rules, we have got an issue. We just put in individual responsibility, thats what we do as a team. Eddie Jones has a leadership group in place and doesnt think curfews will ever be needed Jones was of a similar opinion, adding: They are adults. Most of the players have got their own families. Theyll come back here, theyll have a few beers and theyll decide when they go to bed.The time we have to have a curfew is the time we dont have a leadership group within the team. Faf du Plessis will find out by Sunday if he will face a charge for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct after South Africas stand-in captain was shown on camera shining the ball with what appeared to be a sweet in his mouth. Michael Pierce Jersey . ICC CEO David Richardson is expected to take a call over the incident, which took place during the recent Hobart Test. The footage emerged on Wednesday, the day after the conclusion of the match, which South Africa won by an innings and 80 runs to take the series. It was not reported by match officials within the stipulated 18 hours after the game. Instead, the ICC was alerted of the incident through media queries and is now reviewing it of its own volition. It has until Sunday, a stipulated five days after it began reviewing the footage, to make its decision. The ICC has been alerted to the footage and is currently reviewing the incident from the perspective of it being a possible breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, an ICC spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo.Although Cricket South Africa has not made an official comment on the matter, it is understood the board is confident du Plessis was acting within the laws of the game. Cricket Australia has also not commented, neither has it registered an official complaint. This is not the first time du Plessis has come under scrutiny. In 2013, five penalty runs were awarded to Pakistan, the ball changed and du Plessis fined 50% of his match fee for rubbing the ball close to the zipper of his trouser pocket during a Test in Dubai. Du Plessis pleaded guilty to the charge and match referee David Boon said he was satisfied that du Plessis actions were not part of a deliberate and/or prolonged attempt to unfairly manipulate the condition of the ball.It is also not the first time South Africa have faced allegations of tampering with the ball, by either opposition or officials. In March 2014, David Warner accused AB de Villiers of scuffing up the ball with his gloves, for which Warner was fined 15% of his match fee. After the Perth Test, Josh Hazlewood said he saw South Africa throwing the ball onto the pitch in order to try and accelerate the deterioration of one side in order to generate reverse-swing. Ahead of the Hobart Test, du Plessis maintained the ball had reversed the same for both teams and said the issue had been blown out of proportion. Neither incident was taken up further.Previously, in July 2014, Vernon Philander was fined 75% of his match fee after footage of him digging into the ball with his nail was made available to Jeff Crowe, the match referee in Sri Lanka. Philander accepted his penalty without contest.South Africa were originally scheduled to play a two-day pink-ball practice match over the weekend in Melbourne. Instead, that game has been altered to a one-day match on Saturday, giving them extra time off after their series win and ahead of the final Test, which starts in Adelaide from November 24. Josh Bynes Jersey . Breaking three of his own world records on his way to winning in Paris, Chan silenced the critics and left the audiences standing in appreciation and awe. Corey Harris Jersey . A big centre with all the tools to be an elite player, Johansen paced the Blue Jackets with a standout game Saturday night. He had a goal and two assists for a career-high three points as Columbus beat the New York Islanders 5-2 to snap a five-game losing streak. . After Mondays hard-fought loss, the wait seemed longer than usual. Getting set to go their separate ways for a short Christmas break, the Raptors coach credited his team for their effort on a seemingly impossible three-game road trip, urging them to build on that success when they get back to work at the end of the week. SEATTLE -- The dimming postseason hopes of the Seattle Mariners gained a spark of light Friday night, and theyll get at least one more chance to play a meaningful game. The Mariners (86-74) host Oakland in another must-win game Saturday night, trailing second-place Toronto by one game in the American League wild-card race and the Detroit Tigers by a half-game. Baltimore is two games ahead of Seattle, although the Mariners could force a tie with them with two wins and two Baltimore losses. All that the Mariners know is that they need to keep winning. A loss Saturday is likely to be the final nail in the coffin, so Seattle is not trying to look too hard at the scoreboard and just focus on the task at hand.We know the position we have, but we still have to play our games, slugger Nelson Cruz said.Seattle did its part Friday night by putting the As away early. Four home runs, including two from second baseman Robinson Cano, led the Mariners out to a 5-0 lead on the way to an easy win. By the time Cano and Cruz hit back-to-back homers in the third inning, the Blue Jays had already lost to Boston to give Seattle a chance at making up a game in the standings. You want the other team to lose, but at the same time youve got to win, Cano said. When its time to play, youve got to give everything youve got.TThe As (67-93) dont have anything on the line as they head into the final weekend of the season. Tandon Doss Jersey. Oakland managed only two hits Friday and continues to struggle with the bats.Obviously, were not swinging the bat very well, manager Bob Melvin said after the 5-1 loss. Look at our overall numbers, and theyre not that good.Seattle has used a powerful offense to stay in the postseason hunt all the way through September. The four home runs Friday gave the Mariners 221 this season, second only to Baltimore (250) among AL teams. The Mariners rotation lined up well enough that the teams top two veterans -- Hisashi Iwakuma and Felix Hernandez -- are slated to pitch this weekend. Iwakuma (16-11) takes the ball Saturday night with Hernandez scheduled to pitch Sunday.Whatever happens Saturday night, at least the Mariners are playing a meaningful game in October -- something that rarely happens for a franchise that hasnt reached the postseason since 2001.I love this kind of situation, said Cano, who played in 51 playoff games with the New York Yankees before coming to Seattle in 2014. Its every kids dream come true. When you play baseball, you want to play for October. ' ' '
CLEVELAND -- Already down, the Browns have been kicked again by the injury bug. Kevin Pierre-Louis Jersey .Kicker Patrick Murray was placed on injured reserve Saturday after hurting his surgically repaired left knee in practice, forcing the Browns to sign Cody Parkey to handle their kicking duties in Sundays game at Miami. With Murrays injury, the Browns have lost six starters after just the first two games this season. Quarterbacks Robert Griffin III (broken hand), Josh McCown (broken collarbone), center Cam Erving (bruised lung), wide receiver Corey Coleman (broken hand) and defensive end Carl Nassib (broken hand) are all out this week and a few of them will be sidelined for several more games.Murray got hurt during Fridays walkthrough. He missed last season with Tampa Bay after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament knee ligament. Murray beat out incumbent Travis Coons in training camp this summer. He missed 52-yard field goal and had an extra-point blocked last week in a loss to Baltimore.Parkey spent most of last season on the injured list with a groin issue, one season after he set the NFL rookie scoring record for Philadelphia with 150 points and made the Pro Bowl. He was waived earlier this month by the Eagles, who kept Caleb Sturgis as their kicker. As if this wasnt enough for the Browns, they could be without two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden on Sunday. Haden strained his groin in practice Friday and is listed as questionable for the Dolphins. Haden, who missed five games last season with injuries, had two interceptions last week against the Ravens. With Griffin and McCown out, rookie quarterback Cody Kessler will make his NFL regular-season debut in Miami. Kessler is the fifth quarterback to start Clevelands past five games and the 26th to start for the franchise since 1999.---AP NFL website: and Brandon Marshall Jersey . The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. After the beautiful chaos that emerged from what was supposed to be a ho-hum Week 11, this is how its going to be? An undefeated Alabama followed by a wad of one-loss teams. If thats how it indeed plays out (and at this point assuming anything is as ill-advised as holding up a We want Bama sign on College GameDay), then how will the men and women in that hotel conference room in Grapevine, Texas, sift through that pile of one-blemish résumés? Will they compare the best moments of each teams W column? Or will they stack up the low points over on the right side of the season-dividing dash? For now, lets assume theyre going with that common solo digit, the shared 1 in the loss column. Not all Ls are created equal. So, who owns the most impressive defeat? Heres how we rank them.1. Louisville Loss: Oct. 1 at No. 5 Clemson, 42-36Perhaps the biggest advantage that the College Football Playoff selection committee holds over the analytics of the BCS era is the gift of context. Real humans who watched games and closely follow the season understand what a game really was at the time it was played. No game this season has been played with more hype or pressure or within a more insane atmosphere than Lamar Jacksons visit to Death Valley in Week 5. That committee also knows that the Cardinals came within a few yards of being in position to tie the score or win the game via a PAT in the closing ticks. No other team on this list suffered a loss to a ranked team on the road, let alone came within a couple of plays of defeating a top-five team in one of the games most vicious stadiums.2. Ohio State Loss: Oct. 22 at unranked Penn State, 24-21In the playoff era, your enemies are also your friends. The Buckeyes legitimized Penn States rebound season and have continually benefited from doing so as the Nittany Lions have climbed the charts in the weeks since, reaching the AP top 10 on Sunday afternoon ... though now OSU needs PSU to lose one more so the Buckeyes can make a Big Ten title run. Again, context matters, and anyone who watched Ohio States emotional slobberknocker of an OT win at Wisconsin the week before knows the Buckeyes were the walking wounded when they arrived at Happy Valley yet still carried a lead into the final five minutes of the game.3. West Virginia Loss: Oct 29 at unranked Oklahoma State, 37-20The committee is clearly not impressed with the Mountaineers or the Big 12 overall, but a visit to Stillwater is never easy and hindsight tells us this victory is now part of a six-game winning streak for the Cowboys, during which they have rocketed from unranked to 13th in the AP poll. The final score is also not indicative of a game in which WVU trailed by only one TD with less than nine minutes remaining, though its offense was exposed with an untimely clunkiness.4. Michigan Loss: Nov. 12 at unranked Iowa, 14-13Losing to a four-loss team is never good, but a one-point loss on the road in a hostile environment against a brand-name program that came within seconds of being in last years playoff? Theres not a lot of disgrace to be found there. Except, you know, for the unranked, four-loss stuff.5. Washington Loss: Nov. 12 vs. No. 20 USC, 26-13Again, a room of football watchers understands that USC isnt your average three-loss team and is also light-years beyond the Trojans team that started the season 1-3. But losing at home is bad. And losing a game at home in which you spent most of the fourth quarter down two scores is really bad, especially when your remaining games -- whether it be two or three -- will be against teams with two or more losses.6. Clemson Loss: Nov. 12 vs. unranked Pitt, 43-42The Tigers still hold the steering wheel on their playoff road, but this loss was a bad one any way you carve it. It takes all the worst parts of the defeats weve already listed and combines them into one nasty afternoon -- losing at home, against an unranked four-loss team, committing a turnover that allowed that team back into the game, and also being exposed on defense. All of this while the ACC Coastal cant decide whom to send to Orlando to presumably face Clemson in the relocated conference title game.If youve ever read this column before, first off, thanks. Second, then you know I have a soft spot for non-power Gang of 5 schools. Still, were not including Troy, Boise State and San Diego State on this list. But of those three, Id rank them in that order. Troys only defeat was like Louisvilles, a six-point loss at Clemson that came down to an onside kick. Meanwhile, Boise lost to a resurgent but still shaky Wyoming team on the road, and San Diego State inexplicably fell at South Alabama, the same team that lost to Troy two weeks later.Speaking of San Diego State, its time to get on with Flipping the Field and we start, as always, with my Aztecs man crush.Donnel Pumphrey Watch. The San Diego State Aztecs set a school record for single-game rushing with 474 against Nevadas next-to-worst-in-FBS run defense. During the 46-16 win, Pumphrey rushed for 198 yards, becoming only the fifth player to crack the 6,000-yard mark. He reached 6,051, moving past DeAngelo Williams into fourth on the FBS career rushing list. Hes now only 31 yards behind Tony Dorsett for third and would have passed him if not for the erasing of a second half 40-yard run because of a holding penalty. With four games remaining, he needs 347 yards to pass Ron Dayne atop the legendary list.Jabrill Peppers?Watch. The Human Swiss Army Knife lined up at four defensive positions and two offensive positions in Saturday nights loss at Iowa. He also returned one kickoff and one punt, though his offensive contribution was minimal at 11 total yards. From the Ridonculous Stats Department: According to my numerical brothers and sisters in ESPN Stats & Info: Against Mississippi State, freshman QB Jalen Hurts tied the Alabama record for TDs responsible for with five and became the first player in Crimson Tide history to rush for 100 yards while throwing for 300. Clemsons Deshaun Watson set the single-game ACC passing record with 580, in a loss. In fact, the 10 passers who topped 350 yards Saturday were 4-6. UNLV defeated Wyoming 69-66 in three overtimes, coming one point shy of the FBS OT record for combined points scored. Were going streaking! Alabama has won 64 straight against unranked teams. USC has won six in a row, marking its longest win streak since the Pete Carroll era ended in 2009. Washington State has won eight straight in a single season for the first time since 1930. Notre Dame won its 15th straight over Army. Oklahomas 14th consecutive conference win is the longest Big 12 streak since Texas won 20 straight in 2004-06. Speaking of Texas, running back?DOnta Foreman?posted his 11th straight 100-plus yard rushing game, tying Earl Campbells school record.Get in the car, Frank... Washingtons second-longest FBS win streak was ended at 12. Oregon hit seven losses for the first time since 1991, giving up 540 yards by Stanford, the sixth time the Ducks have surrendered 500-plus yards in a game, tied for most in FBS. Kentuckys record against Tennessee since 1985 is now 1-31. The Wildcats lost Saturday despite rushing for 443 yards. Enteringg Saturday, teams that rushed for 400 yards were 30-0 this season. Bronko Nagurski Jersey. Now they are 30-1. Auburn matched its lowest single-game point total of the Gus Malzahn era, mustering only seven in a loss to Georgia. The last time the Tigers were held to seven points was in 2014 ... in a loss to Georgia.R.I.P., greatest streak ever? Division III Mount Union had its 112-regular season winning streak ended by a 31-28 loss to John Carroll. But dang, yall, 112 wins in a row?! The Purple Raiders regular-season record since 1994 now stands at 222-2. Looking over their media guide, the oldest handful of players on their roster was born in fall 94. Over that span, the team has won 11 national championships (12 if you go back one more year to 93), and Saturdays loss ended a quarter-century run of conference titles.Remember Heroes, Part 1. Dozens of teams around the nation took the field this weekend sporting red, white and blue helmet logos. Near the top of the list were these lids worn by the East Carolina Pirates, a scheme that was also used in the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium end zones and along the sidelines.Remember Heroes, Part 2. SMU joined ECU among the Veterans Day salute elite, and in the same game. We shouldnt be surprised that the coolest tributes were in the American conference, should we?Remembering Heroes, Part 3. Marshall also honored heroes Saturday, though it wasnt for Veterans Day. On Nov. 14, 1970, nearly every member of the Thundering Herd football team died in a plane crash outside of Huntington, West Virginia. On Saturday, the 2016 team and staff wore uniforms that paid tribute to the 70 team as well as the 71 squad that saved the program.Tommy West Coachs News Conference of the Week: Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia. Holgorsen, who enjoys news conferences about as much as he enjoys a root canal, was in the middle of ripping himself for not having his offense ready to go during the Mountaineers 24-20 win over Texas when he was thrown a question about the pop in the leg of kicker Mike Molina. He laughed, smiled and growled, How would I know? You think I sit there and study the kickers all day long? After a swig of water, he reiterated his confidence in the 5-foot-9, 150-pound redshirt junior and said they did try to save his leg by limiting his practice reps because its a long season and he looks like a second-grader. Speaking of looking like a second-grader, did you see Holgos interactions with the officials during the game??Danny Ford Scientific Rocket Quote of the Week: Luke Falk, QB, Washington State. Falk is only 21 years old but sounded wise beyond his years when he spoke to our Chris Low the day after the presidential election, with words every side of the fence should listen to. One of the best things about playing football is that youve got guys from different cultures, different races, different parts of the country and guys that see the world differently. But if you dont put those differences aside, come together as a team and sacrifice for each other, youre not going to be successful. I hope our country can learn that same lesson.Weston Steelhammer Name of the Week: Chris Blewitt, Pittsburgh. A kicker who missed a PAT and had a field goal attempt blocked managed to bounce back and boot the winning field goal that knocked off the nations second-ranked team ... and hes named Blew-itt?! College football is the best. Thankfully Pitt color commentator Bill Osborn didnt blow out his vocal cords as the kick went through.Frank Reich Backup QB of the Week Award: Shea Patterson, QB, Ole Miss. You can question Hugh Freezes decision to yank Pattersons redshirt with only three games left in his freshman season, but you cant dispute the results. Stepping in for injured Chad Kelly, the 19-year-old threw for 338 yards and a pair of TDs as the 4-5 Rebels upset Texas A&M, which was in the College Football Playoff top four only two weeks ago. He outdueled another recent off-the-bencher, Jake Hubenak.Comeback of the Week Award, also named for Frank Reich: Penn State 45, Indiana 31. The Nittany Lions trailed the Hoosiers by 10 in the third quarter and by three with 11 minutes remaining, but rallied for their third double-digit second-half comeback of the season, keeping the playoff hopes of Happy Valley alive. Honorable Mention: Louisville trailed Wake Forest 12-0 and 12-10 entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Deacons 34-0 in that final quarter.Comeback of Last Week Award, yes, also named for Frank Reich: Eastern Michigan 48, Ball State 41. My former Bottom 10 friends down at The Factory overcame a 21-point deficit on the road to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1995 and on the cusp of their first bowl invite since 87. The game was essentially won via a crazy scrambling shoulda-been-sacked 34-yard pass by Brogan Roback to the 1-foot line. It was a Week 10 game but happened nearly a week ago via the early week #MACtion schedule. I dont care. This turnaround by the Eagles deserves all the attention it can get.The Guy You Should Know About But Probably Dont: Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina. Jones hauled in a dozen catches in the Pirates loss to SMU but has now moved to within eight catches of setting the NCAA career receptions record of 387. That mark is held by his former teammate and current Atlanta Falcon, Justin Hardy. Hes catching balls so fast our tweets cant keep up with the stats. The Team You Should Know About But Probably Dont: Old Dominion. Less than a decade ago, the ODU football program didnt exist. It was only three seasons ago when Bobby Wilders team made the jump to FBS and Conference USA. Now the Monarchs are 7-3, bowl eligible and, though its not likely, still in contention for the C-USA East title. The Game You Should Be Psyched For But Probably Arent: USF at SMU, Saturday, 7 p.m. ET. Just two seasons ago, the SMU Mustangs won one game and the Bottom 10 title. Last year they won twice. Now they are 5-5 and on the cusp of their first bowl berth since 2012 and just their fifth postseason trip since the 1984 death penalty handed down by the NCAA. Meanwhile, the Bulls, who won two games four years ago, are 8-2 but walking a thin sheet of American conference ice. They need to win out and hope that Temple, the team that handed them their only conference loss, stumbles against Tulane and/or ECU so they can win the American East and a title game date, likely against Navy. Are there playoff implications? No. But are there big implications for a pair of programs clawing their way back to the good old days? Absolutely. By the way, not to brag, but last week in this space I told you to keep an eye on Pitt at Clemson ... OK, yeah, Im totally bragging.Extra Point: Speaking of death penalties, my colleague and friend Paul Finebaum was on College GameDay Saturday morning and spoke some very strong words about the ongoing situation at Baylor. As a father or, heck, just as a compassionate human being, you can disagree with the punishment that Paul suggested, but you cant disagree with the passion behind it. See it for yourself here.? After an opening round upset loss to Luminosity Gaming in the Stage 2 playoffs, OpTic Gaming appeared to head into MLG Orlando motivated and hungry to reclaim its spot a top the competitive Call of Duty scene. Richard Seymour Jersey . Team EnVyUs, having won the Stage 2 playoffs, entered MLG Orlando looking to prove that its championship win wasnt a fluke. Both teams seemed destined to meet in the Grand Finals at MLG Orlando, with each team trying to walk away with the grand prize and a statement win heading into the biggest event of the year, Call of Duty XP.And like most events during the 2016 season, it was OpTic Gaming who emerged victorious. Heres a breakdown of the action that took place during the final day of MLG Orlando.Follow the Green Brick Road?Despite a terrific run through the upper bracket, Day 3 was a rocky road for Team eLevate. First, it was a 3-0 series loss to OpTic Gaming, in which Jared Nagafen Harrell and the rest of eLevate struggled to keep up in the slaying category. Moving down to a do-or-die matchup against Team EnVyUs in the lower bracket finals, eLevate struggled once more in the slaying category, dropping all three rounds en route to a tournament-ending loss. While eLevate has been one of the premiere Search and Destroy teams in the CWL, the team must improve in the respawn game modes such as Hardpoint and Uplink if it plans on making a dent at Call of Duty XP.EnVyUs, on the other hand, was excellent in the slaying category, relying on the entire roster to make critical plays during different junctions of its lower bracket run. Whether it was critical kills by Johnathan John Perez and Jordan Jkap Kaplan in the 3-1 lower bracket semifinal win over FaZe Clan, or a near dominating performance by Austin SlasheR Liddicoat in the aforementioned 3-0 win over Team eLevate, EnVyUs certainly followed up their Stage 2 win with a convincing performance at MLG Orlando. However, needing to win two best-of-five series over OpTic Gaming thanks to the double elimination format, EnVyUs entered the MLG Orlando finals in an unenviable position.Clash of the TitansIf EnVyUs was worn down and weary heading into its final matchup, the team certainly didnt show it, racing out ahead of OpTic Gaming 2-0 in the first best-of-five matchup. Led by SlasheR and John, EnVyUs battled through a back and fourth Round 1 Hardpoint, and rallied from an 0-4 deficit in Round 2 Search and Destroy to claim a 6-4 win. But even with a series cushion in its back pocket, OpTic Gaming refused to fold, securing both Round 3 Uplink and Round 4 Capture the Flag to force a Round 5. Ian Crimsix Porter, who struggled during the first two rounds of the matchup, was huge during Round 4 Capture the Flag, securing three captures on his own while putting together a 26/14 KD. However, even with all the momentum going against them, Team EnVyUs would stave off elimination, securing a 6-3 Round 5 Search and Destroy win thanks in no small part to SlasheR, who finished with a terrific 13/5 K/D.Now, even with OpTic Gaming in the Grand Final and needing just one more series win to claim the MLG Orlando crown, EnVyUs appeared to run out of gas. First, another back and fourth Round 1 Hardpoint went the way of OpTic Gaming, as both Matthew FormaL Piper and Damon Karma Barlow put up over 40 kills. Then, it was the Crimsix show during a 6-0 Round 2 Search and Destroy win, in which the multi-time champion posted a 9/2 KD mark. And finally, with its opponents tournament lives teetering precariously on the edge, OpTic Gaming put the tournament away, riding an offensive assault by both Crimsix and FormaL en route to a 15-8 Round 3 Uplink win.Take nothing away from EnVyUs admirable run through the lower bracket. The players performance during MLG Orlando officially solidifies them as one of the best teams in the world and makes for yet another juicy storyline heading into Call of Duty XP.But like so many other events during Call of Duty: Black Ops III, it was OpTic Gaming who reigned supreme in Orlando. And its the Green Wall who look like the favorites heading into the world championships in September. Ricky Watters Jersey . LUCIE, Fla. Paul Hofer Jersey . PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- Brooke Copeland scored 13 points and No. 23 Florida, without leading scorer Eleanna Christinaki, outscored North Carolina A&T 23-2 in the fourth quarter to roll to a 67-38 win on Sunday, ending a two-game losing streak. After the game, Florida coach Amanda Butler said Christinaki, a sophomore from Greece who averaged 17.6 in the Gators first nine games, quit on her team.Christinaki and freshman Delicia Washington, were suspended for the first half of the game for what Butler said was behavior that is not becoming of a Gator nor part of our culture. Butler said Christinaki , who was named to the All-Southeastern Conference freshman team last season, had refused to accept the suspension and had left the team.Washington had second-half 10 points and Ronni Williams and Haley Lorenzen each had 10 rebounds for the Gators (7-3). SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Tony La Russa . -- Only Allen Iverson could deliver a Hall of Fame speech that name-checked 90s rappers, referenced Chappelles Show and thanked just about every person he met along his basketball journey. Only Shaquille ONeal could follow that act with what amounted to a half-hour comedy routine that needled former coaches and teammates and included a soap-opera shout-out.The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fames Class of 2016 lived up to its lofty billing with an epic three-hour induction ceremony Friday night at Springfields Symphony Hall, with Iverson and ONeal stealing the show.Iverson delivered a captivating 31-minute speech in which he overcame initial jitters during a memorable address that featured multiple standing ovations. Fans with No. 3 Iverson jerseys in the balcony cheered throughout.Dressed in a black suit with a black shirt and tie, Iverson paused repeatedly to collect himself at the start of his speech while thanking his three presenters -- Larry Brown, Julius Erving and John Thompson -- as well as members of his family.Fighting tears throughout, Iverson thanked former Georgetown coach Thompson for saving my life.[After] the incident happened in high school and all that was taken away ... no other schools would recruit me anymore, Iverson recalled, referencing a racial brawl at a bowling alley that landed him in jail. His conviction in the case was later overturned. My mom went to Georgetown and begged [Thompson] to give me a chance. And he did.He said he later left Georgetown only as an OK basketball player. But once I started to listen to Larry Brown and take constructive criticism, I learned how much of a great, great coach that he really is. ... Thats when I became an MVP, Iverson said.In maybe the most memorable moment of his address, Iverson recalled his first time playing against his idol, Michael Jordan.Man, I wanted to be like Mike, Iverson said. I remember the first time I played against him. I walked out on the court and I looked at him. And, for the first time in my life, a human being didnt really look real to me. You know what I mean? I dont know if you all watch the Chappelle Show, but he talked about a certain incident where somebodys seeing Rick James. Like I literally seen his aura. It looked like he was glowing.Im sitting there, and Im saying, Man, thats Michael. And Im looking at him. I cant stop looking at him. Im looking at his shoes, and Im like, man, hes got on the Jordans! It was my Mike. It was my idol, my hero. After the Jordan story, Iverson seemed to settle in. Nervously rocking at the start of his speech, he confidently thanked a Rolodex of coaches, owners, teammates and rappers.I want to thank Biggie Smalls, Redman, Jadakiss, Tupac and Michael Jackson for being my theme music throughout my career, Iverson said.Twenty-two minutes into his speech, Iverson said, The Philly fans, and that elicited a monster reaction from the balcony, which immediately engaged in an MVP chant.Added Iverson: My relationship with the fans in Philadelphia is like no other. I thank you all for the support over the years. ... You never jumped off the bandwagon, continued to support me like true fans are supposed to.Iverson also paid tribute to the ones that stuck by me throughout my journey. He cited all the barbershop talk that my family had and all the arguments my friends had with people in the barbershop and hair salon. Now you can say: Well, look, my man is solidified.Iverson closed his speech with a nod to the guys who are not my friends anymore.Im glad that you blew your cover for me to recognize that you [werent] any good to my family or me. And I appreciate yall for that. So if I make any more new friends, I know the signs, he said. Not to be outdone, ONeal took the stage for a punchline-filled speech as the final inductee of the night.ONeal referenced Luke and Laura from General Hospital and joked about his commercial endeavors, including how he sat in a Buick I knew I couldnt fit in. Drawing laughter, ONeal added, Hey, they paid me $3 million. What did you want me to say, no?His speech had serious moments, like when he thanked his parents, Phil Harrison and Lucille ONeal, for giving him the discipline and drive that drove his NBA dream. If I know my father, hes up there arguing with Wilt [Chamberlain] that his son is the best big man in the game, ONeal said. One day when some father quizzes his sons on the greats of the game, I hope Shaquille ONeal will be the answer, he later added.Maybe ONeals most memorable line came when he thanked former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant.Kobe Bryant, a guy that would push me and help me win three titles in a row, said ONeal. He would also help me get pushed off the team and traded to?Miami. After detailing his on-court chess matches with Iverson, ONeal turned his attention to fellow inductee Yao Ming. For years, I never spoke to Yao. I thought there was a language barrier there, ONeal said. Then one game he hit me with a Hakeem Olajuwon bang-bang fadeaway. I said, Hey, Yao, nice move. He said, Thanks, my brother. I said, Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You speak English? He was like, Shaq, you never talk to me. Of course I speak English. And ONeal didnt miss an opportunity to make a free throw joke.Id like to thank Nick Anderson for missing those four free throws in a row in my first NBA Finals, ONeal said. Im just playing, Nick. But when I was writing this speech, I was like, You know what? Itd be pretty funny if a terrible free throw shooter criticized a bad one. Then I said to myself, Damn, I should have listened to [underhanded free throw shooter] Rick Barry. Then I also said to myself, You know what? Id rather be a terrible free throw shooter that, in about 15 minutes, will be in the Hall of Fame. So, Rick, thanks, but no thanks.Yao won the opening tip and delivered a heartfelt speech that showcased his own sense of humor. When I heard that I was speaking first tonight, I thought that someone made a mistake, he said. I think this spot belongs to the great Allen Iverson. You want to know why? Because I need practice more than him.Flanked by presenters Bill Russell, Dikembe Mutombo and Bill Walton, Yao joked about being confused when Cuttino Mobley invited him over for soul food (I thought he meant salty food) and thanked Rockets fans for sticking by him through injuries (I am a Texan and a Houston Rocket for life). He also referenced his battles with fellow inductee ONeal by noting, Every game we played reminded me of the old saying, What doesnt kill you makes you stronger. In his speech, Michigan State?coach Tom Izzo made special mention of his players in attendance, including Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, who heard some boos on the red carpet on his way into the event but was cheered by the crowd when referenced by Izzo.Izzo thanked his parents, Carl and Dorothy, for being his first mentors. The 90-year-old Dorothy was in attendance; Carl passed away in December.Izzo briefly got choked up as he spoke of his father, who he said instilled in him a work ethic that remains with him today. The seven Final Fours and championship are just frosting on the cake, Izzo said. The induction ceremony also featured longtime?Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf and WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes.Reinsdorf chronicled what led him to purchase the Bulls in 1984. It was a move he said legendary New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner panned, telling him he would never make any money. He enjoyed proving him wrong. Its been a great life, Reinsdorf said. I know its the fourth quarter, but Im hoping for overtime. Two of the themes on the night were family and journeys. That was the essence of Swoopes speech. She said she was thankful for her path from tiny Brownfield, Texas, and that her cancer-stricken mother, Louise, was able to see it.What a ride its been, she said.Videotaped acceptance speeches aired on behalf of Darell Garretson (27-year NBA referee), Cumberland Posey (early African-American pioneer), John McLendon (coach) and Zelmo Beaty (member of ABA all-time team).Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. Genesis Cabrera . LOUIS -- St. Vada Pinson . Note: The Calgary Flames announced Tuesday that Sean Monahan would not be made available to Canadas World Junior team. . The FA rejected Wilsheres appeal that the length of his punishment was "clearly excessive" and said Thursday his suspension begins with immediate effect. He will miss league matches against Chelsea on Monday and West Ham on Dec. The ball was slowly trickling to the boundary, but no one went to pick it up. The crowd began jeering the terrible bit of fielding - Mohammad Amir committed worse mistakes on Thursday - but as he dropped to the field, the jeers turned into a concerned collection of whispers.Amir buried his face in the turf as he clutched his knee. He couldnt keep still through the pain. His knee didnt slide on the ground, it dug in. His weight went towards the ball, but his knee did not. His first instinct was to go after the ball, but as he moved, grabbing for it in mid-air, he just collapsed.Mark Taylor suggested he had a kneecap problem, those in the pool swam across for a closer look and medics from both teams converged on Amir. Some non-experts noticed swelling, others a cruciate ligament injury, the sort that ended players careers every footy season in Australia. It was the kind of pointless speculation you do when there was a star crumpled before you. Simon Jones was mentioned a lot, and no one was talking about magical reverse swing from the 2005 Ashes.A stretcher was called for, but none came. So Amir was helped over the boundary by support staff. People start to talk about why it had to be him. We hadnt seen him unleashed in the series, or at all since he got back to Tests, and now it looked like he could be out of order. His last 39 balls were dots, which seemed to be part of the Misbah-ul-Haq plan to get to dusk and then hope something happened. But it wasnt dusk yet, we hadnt seen what the pink ball could do under dark Gabba skies. We hadnt seen anything. It got darker in the incredibly long time it seemed to take the ambulance cart to make it out to him.Amir has overcome stupidity, criminal acts, jail time and five years out of professional sport, and now stopping a ball at fine leg had brought him down.On the outfield, there was an enormous divot and, despite the break in play, no one covered it up. Pakistan had a similar-sized hole in their team. The message from the PCB was not to worry; the early signs were good, they said. But how could you not? An entire army of people were down on the boundary helping Amir out. He couldnt even hobble the 80 metres to the change room.At drinks in the final session, 18 minutes after Amir had fallen, a groundsman went out and filled in his divot. Twelve minutes after that, Amir jogged back onto the field. His recovery had seemingly taken less time than it took for the ambulance cart to reach him. As he ran across the outfield you could almost sense the different sections of the crowd realising it was him. There was a sound wave of people saying, Whats all this about? Was he brave, stupid, or soft? Did it even matter? The new ball was due soon and he was obviously going to take it. Steve Carlton. Maybe, if you squinted with your head on the side, he was limping. But he still took that brand new fluorescent pink ball. Amir didnt trample the turf like Wahab Riaz. He wasnt a killer semi-trailer like Ryan Harris. He floated across the grass, barely making an impact, and even at the crease there was no violent crash. It was more a little skip and the ball zipped out of his fingers. This man whose kneecap was dislocated, whose anterior cruciate was torn, whose day, Test and series were over, was delivering a ball to Peter Handscomb like nothing was wrong.Until the third step of his follow through. And there was a limp, a worry, but he went back to the top of his mark and floated in a couple more times. Handscomb took a single off the the third ball; it was the first run off him in the last 42, delivered either side of a trip on the ambulance cart. The fourth ball was the Amir that made lovers of fast bowling cry when they first heard the news of his fixing all those years ago. It shaped to drift in, just short of a length, and then decided to go away, at pace. To get near it, you would have to be one of the best batsmen in the world, and Steven Smith was. The ball went through to Sarfraz Ahmed, who threw it to slip as Amir walked back to his mark.Later, after a few replays, it was clear Smith had edged the ball and, instead of enjoying his wicket, Amir finished the over hopping and grabbing at his knee, his trousers still stained from his fall. For the next little bit, he bowled more trademark Amir balls, the kind that made you gasp and despair at their beauty as they beat the bat. One was so good Smith seemed angry at its existence as he tried to recreate the kind of alien movement it got with his hand. There were more than went past Handscomb too; one of them took the edge but fell short of slip.It was the kind of magical spell Test cricket has been waiting to see from Amir for years, and hed been waiting for it the most. The only problem was, though he might have overcome serious injury, he couldnt take a wicket. As good as he was, as dangerous as he looked, and as much drama as he had created - none of it mattered when the edges did not carry, or when they werent spotted. His Lazarus rise was ultimately pointless. They say you cant tell much from just seeing the stats, but you could from Amirs on day one at the Gabba: Three limps, 18 overs, one knee injury, six maidens, one ambulance cart, one wicket, one injury, 33 runs and one miraculous recovery. PULLMAN, Wash. Yeezy 350 v2 Black Pas Cher . -- Washington State coach Mike Leach is famous for his Air Raid passing offenses.Turns out the Cougars have a ground game too.Washington State rushed for 280 yards and six touchdowns to beat Oregon 51-33 on Saturday, sending the Ducks to their third consecutive loss.Jamal Morrow, Gerard Wicks and James Williams each ran for two touchdowns for Washington State (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12), which was coming off a bye week. Washington State defeated Oregon in double overtime last year, a game that sparked the Cougars run to a 9-4 record.I dont think anybody expected six touchdowns out of us, Morrow said. Its great.I dont think tonight was our full potential, Wicks said. Youll see a way better running team.Leach said the passing of Luke Falk, who threw for 371 yards, helped set up the ground attack. The biggest thing was the passing was real effective, Leach said. We got them off balance with the pass.Oregon (2-3, 0-2) has lost three straight games and held a team meeting earlier in the week to seek a turnaround.Royce Freeman, who missed the last game with a leg injury, ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns for Oregon. We didnt have any big plays of any kind tonight, said Oregon coach Mark Helfrich. Both sides put a ton of pressure on each other at the wrong times; the offense was not answering, the defense was not answering.Sticking together is paramount, and we will, Helfrich said.Washington State piled up 651 yards of total offense, to 416 total yards for Oregon.Falk completed 36 of 48 passes with one touchdown.Almost every play they called was a pass and they checked to a run, Helfrich said. That balance was very difficult for us to stop.Oregons Dakota Prukop completed 14 of 22 passes for 132 yards.Washington State came in averaging 121 rushing yards per game.Washington State opened the scoring with Falk hitting Gabe Marks on a 7-yard touchdown pass.Oregon replied with an 11-yard touchdown run by Freeman to tie the score at 7-7.Washington State marched 75 yards on its next drive, with Wicks running four yards for the touchdown and a 14-7 lead.Freeman bulled over from the 1 to tie the score at 14-14 midway through the second quarter.Washington State went 80 yards in seven plays on its next series, including a 40-yard bomb from Falk to Kyle Sweet. Morrow ran the final 10 yards for a touchdown and a 21-14 lead.Oregon went three-and-out and Washington State got the ball near midfield. Wicks scored again, this time on a 2-yard run, for a 28-14 lead at halftime.Washington State opened the second half by marching to the Oregon 5, but Erik Powells 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked. He has missed all four of his field goal attempts this season.Oregon immediately gave the ball back, when Dwayne Stanford fumbled after a reception and WSUs Robert Taylor recovered. He returned the ball to the Oregon 26. But Washington State turned the ball over on downs when Falks pass to Sweet in the end zone fell incomplete.Prukop was then sacked in the end zone by Hercules Mataafa for a safety and WSU led 30-14.After a WSU punt, Freeman ran 75 yards for his third touchdown to cut Oregons deficit to 30-20 late in the third. Oregons conversion pass failed. The Cougars replied with a 75-yard drive that ended with Morrows 14-yard touchdown run for a 37-20 lead.Williams added a 38-yard touchdown burst midway through the fourth that gave Washington State a 44-20 lead.Charles Nelson returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to cut WSUs lead to 44-26.Williams added a 3-yard touchdown run.THE TAKEAWAYOregon: The Ducks lead the all-time series 47-40-7, but are clearly not as formidable as in recent years. Their defense looks suspect.Washington State: The Air Raid offense also has a ground attack this year. The Cougars appear to be rebounding from an 0-2 start, and have topped 50 points for two consecutive games. ST. Air Max 270 Just Do It Noir . LOUIS -- As the season resumed following a four-day break for the All-Star Game, the San Diego Padres authored perhaps the weekends most stunning result. After losing its first nine meetings with the San Francisco Giants, San Diego broke out the brooms at Petco Park with 4-1, 7-6 and 5-3 wins. It tagged losses on All-Stars Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto, while pounding Jeff Samardzija for five runs in five innings on Saturday night.I think weve grown, Padres manager Andy Green told the San Diego Union-Tribune after Sundays defeat of Cueto. You watch Wil (Myers) work a walk against Cueto and celebrate it like he hit a home run. He made a great pitcher work and we werent necessarily doing that earlier in the year.Having humbled the team with the majors top record, the Padres (41-51) start a four-game series Monday night in St. Louis, a place where their winning streaks normally go to die.Since Busch Stadium opened in its third incarnation in 2006, San Diego is 10-24 there, its only series wins happening in 2006 and 2011. It also was eliminated from the National League Division Series there in 2006.However, Busch has been anything but home sweet home for the Cardinals this year. After a 6-3 loss Sunday to Miami, St. Louis (47-44) fell to 20-28 in the stadium where it was 55-26 a year ago.Whats more, the loss dropped the Cardinals two games behind the Marlins and New York Mets for the final NL wild-card spot, while keeping them eight games back of the Chicago Cubs in the Central Division.St. Louis hitters fanned a season-high 15 times Sunday, four by Randal Grichuk and three by Tommy Pham, whose frustration may have boiled over in a postgame rant about the strike zone of plate umpire Marvin Hudson. The strike zone was horrible, man, Pham said. I mean, the guy had no sense of the inside part of the plate or the outside part of the plate. He needs to be held accountable. Its a guy with a lot of years in the league, you know what Im saying? Itd be different if it were called both ways, but it wasnt. While Pham might have to make out a check to MLB for those remarks, the Cardinals are hoping to cash in on this series against an opponent they beat two out of three in late April at Petco Park, scoring 19 runs in the process.St. Louis starts Mike Leake (6-7, 4.14), whos coming off one of his best outings of the year July 10 in a 5-1 win at Milwaukee. Leake fanned a season-high 10 and walked none in seven innings, recording eight strikeouts on his slider. The Padres counter with left-hander Christian Friedrich (4-5, 4.50), who has lost his last three starts and allowed 12 runs in 15 innings despite fanning 19 and walking three. On Tuesday night, the Cardinals Carlos Martinez (8-6, 2.85) matches up with Colin Rea (5-3, 4.95). San Diegos Andrew Cashner (4-7, 5.05) pitches against Jaime Garcia (6-6, 4.11) on Wednesday night, with St. Louis Adam Wainwright (9-5, 4.15) going up against Luis Perdomo (3-4, 7.36) in Thursday evenings series finale. Anthony Calvillo, through 20 CFL seasons, was frequently invincible and largely stoic in the heat of competition. But underneath the professional exterior he was, and is, compellingly human. I swear the same delivery last year was dispatched over the boundary rope. This summer its shattering the bails.Whats gone wrong?I cant blame my bat, its great piece of willow. Ive definitely been unlucky, though, at least once, as I was run out backing up when the bowler feathered a straight drive off his fingertips into the stumps. But that was once. Some batsmen like to blame the umpire for a run of barren form, and I wish I could. Except for the game where I was triggered lbw sweeping an offspinner - the bowler came up to me after the match and said, I was a bit surprised by that decision - the officials have been flawless. And the fact is, if Id been in form in the first place, Id have connected with that leg-side full toss.Early in the season I tried blaming the pudding wickets, the soft tracks prepared by that Great British groundsman, the wet weather. Soon after I trudged back to the pavilion muttering about the ball not coming on, the next batsman hit a hundred. There is occasional solace when dismissed by a genuine jaffa, and there was certainly that one ball that pitched outside leg and nipped the off bail. That wouldve got Joe Root out, chirped the umpire. And Joe Root would have got a double-hundred in the next match, in which I was yorked by a slow outswinger, on a perfect deck.So whats the solution? Is it a mental problem? Two of my team-mates sought the advice of a bona fide sports psychologist before the season had even started, and both claim the powers conveyed in their counselling sessions have made them better players. The problem is that I studied psychology at university. I know the tricks of the trade. It would be like a magician going to watch a magic show.If my form were a stalling car, Id take it to a mechanic. If my knee was smarting, Id see a physiotherapist. Therefore the cricket equivalent is the coach.Enter Tom Flowers, not only the current leading run scorer of the Leicestershire Premier Division but also the national assistant coach to the England Learning Disability squad. I first met Tom when he was a toddler watching his dad and I play nearly 25 years ago, and I again bumped into him this winter leading my old clubs pre-season training. I gave him a call, reminded him that I once bowled at him as a kid, and then booked a net. Although I grew up with intensive one-to-one coaching, from the woodwork teacher at my comprehensive school telling us to hold the bat like an axe, and from the willing players of Leicestershire CCC wheen they came out on club visits, I hadnt had specialist intervention for years. Air Max 270 2021 Pas Cher. From the moment I put on the pads and started hitting back Toms throwdowns, I was under scrutiny. Instead of a doctor examining my chest with a tap of the stethoscope, Tom was diagnosing my batting illness with each ball that passed my outside edge or drilled into my pads.Unlike the pro player, who has his technique magnified by HD cameras and scything pundits, the average club hacker has guesswork and team-mate gossip. I knew Tom had made the right prognosis when, without seeing me get out this season, he mimicked how I usually end up being skittled - falling over with my head lopped to one side.Head, hands, feet, he told me, and then showed me. Like a nervous tic, I had developed an odd trigger movement. A short step with my front foot before the ball had even been bowled, as Tom demonstrated by feigning to throw and watching me shuffle forward when the ball was still 22 yards away.In a single season I had worked this faux dance step into my stance. From where? Through injury and age, our bodies change. We develop habits that we dont notice. Jonathan Trott began playing in front of his pad, part of a problem he developed in moving too early to play the ball. There is a big difference with having it in your head to get forward, as Geoff Boycott noted when Trott was in the West Indies in 2015, and moving forward before the bowler actually lets go of the ball.I might not be fending off bouncers in Port Elizabeth or Perth, but my twitchy feet mean Im unbalanced when actually hitting - if lucky - the cherry. After a few drills to retrain my impetuous step, I asked Tom how hard it was to blend this technique tweak into my natural game.Look at Jonny Bairstow, Tom instantly replied. What a transformation.Shortly after Bairstow made his Test debut in 2012, he was dropped. Worse than that, there was the sense hed been found out by quick bowling. His technique simply wasnt sound enough for international cricket. So he went away, changed his stance, hands, and backlift. He broke down everything from chest position to how low he crouched. And wow, has it worked. Bairstow has gone from a failing prospect to a regular star. On his technique rehaul, Bairstow says, If I dont keep improving and evolving my game, its not going to work.Inspiration, surely, for this amateur clubber to stop twitching that front foot and to get his head in line. I shall find out if the tweak turns into runs soon. ' ' '
ANAHEIM, Calif. Joe Hassett Jersey . -- Drew Stubbs hit a two-run homer in the 14th inning, and the Cleveland Indians outlasted the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 Tuesday night to gain ground in the AL playoff race. Lonnie Chisenhall got the Indians going with a one-out single in the 14th off Joe Blanton (2-14), the Angels seventh pitcher. Stubbs, the Indians No. 9 hitter, was 0 for 4 with a walk before connecting for his first homer since July 4. Michael Bourn then singled and scored from second on Blantons throwing error for the Angels, who have lost eight of 10. Los Angeles stranded 17 runners -- 13 after the sixth inning, including two in the final frame. Carlos Santana hit a tying homer in the seventh for the Indians, who managed just four hits in the first 12 innings. But with 13 consecutive scoreless innings thrown by nine pitchers -- thats everybody in the bullpen -- Cleveland pulled within 5 1/2 games of AL Central leader Detroit and 3 1/2 games of wild-card leader Oakland after both teams lost earlier. Carlos Carrasco (1-4) pitched the final two innings, setting off cheers in a small group of hearty fans behind Clevelands dugout when he got Chris Nelson on a comebacker with two runners on to end the 5-hour, 17-minute game. J.B. Shuck hit a leadoff homer more than five hours before the final out, but the Angels couldnt score again despite 12 hits. The Angels outpitched the Indians group until they got to Blanton, who leads the AL with 29 homers allowed in his miserable season -- even though he lost his spot in Los Angeles rotation last month. C.J. Wilson yielded four hits and a run while pitching into the eighth inning of a superb start for the Angels, striking out five. But rookie Danny Salazar pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning in his fourth major league start for Cleveland, and his bullpen was impenetrable. Mike Trout sat out his second straight game for Los Angeles, resting his tight right hamstring. Wilson kept the Indians down until Santana led off the seventh with his 15th homer. Peter Bourjos lost his glove over the wall while trying to make the catch -- so the Angels centre fielder scaled the wall, leaped over to get the glove back and climbed back onto the field. Both teams had ample opportunities to score late, and the Indians made several remarkable escapes. Wilson and reliever Dane De La Rosa walked the bases loaded in the eighth, but De La Rosa struck out Yan Gomes to end it. Josh Hamilton then got picked off second base in the eighth, preventing Kole Calhouns single from driving him home moments later. The Angels stranded two more runners in the ninth when Asdrubal Cabrera made an impressive play on Erick Aybars grounder at shortstop to force extra innings. Hamilton, Trumbo and Calhoun loaded the bases with nobody out in the 10th, but relievers Matt Albers, Rich Hill and Bryan Shaw each got one out, with Shaw striking out Grant Green. The Angels then got two runners on with two outs in the 12th, but Bourn leaped to rob Hank Conger of an extra-base hit off the centre-field wall. Los Angeles much-maligned bullpen retired 10 straight batters before Santana drew a two-out walk in the 13th and hustled to third on Gomes single to left, but Cabrera flied out. NOTES: Trout got hurt during Sundays loss to Houston, forcing him to miss consecutive games for the first time in the past two seasons. The All-Star outfielder had skipped just one game all season before this series. ... Juan Gutierrez pitched two hitless extra innings for Los Angeles, but didnt get his first victory since Sept. 9, 2009. Gutierrezs stretch of 127 2-3 innings for Arizona, Kansas City and the Angels without a victory is the majors longest active streak. ... With two off days in the next week, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said hell "make some adjustments" to the Angels starting rotation. Jerome Williams, who hasnt won since June 12, will still start Wednesday against Clevelands 13-game winner, Justin Masterson. ... Angels C Chris Iannetta snapped an 0-for-13 skid with a seventh-inning single, but Bourjos went hitless in six at-bats to drop to 0 for 18 since his return from a broken right wrist. Vladimir Radmanovic Jersey . Zvonareva, who won the tournament in 2009 and 10, couldnt handle her opponents big groundstrokes in only her third event back after 17 months out with a shoulder injury. Zvonareva made her comeback in January in Shenzhen and played in the Australian Open but lost her first matches at both tournaments. Rod Thorn Jersey .Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres have recalled forward Kevin Porter and defenceman Chad Ruhwedel from the minors as part of a five-player roster shuffle made by the NHLs worst team. .com) - The red-hot Los Angeles Kings will try to extend their winning streak to a season-high seven games when they visit the Edmonton Oilers for Sundays clash at Rexall Place. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Leah Smith trains with 19-year-old American swimming sensation Katie Ledecky at the Nations Capital Swim Club in Bethesda, Maryland, so she knows what to expect when she and Ledecky go racing. But it has to help, too, that Smith has a grounded sense of humor about the freakishly large margins of victory that Ledecky keeps posting -- as Ledecky did again in their 400-meter freestyle final Sunday night at the Rio Summer Olympics. When Ledecky was still a blistering 1.19 seconds under her own world record at the halfway point of the race, Smith said she wasnt tempted to steal a look because the roar of crowd seemed to grow louder with every lap. And Smith knew it could only mean one thing. When she does that, part of you is in awe and part of you is trying like crazy to catch up to her, Smith said of Ledecky with a laugh. I knew she was going to win. ... But when I saw her take off with 150 meters to go, I knew she was onto something special. Its kind of fun because you hear the crowd going insane and you try to pretend its for you, even though you know its for Katie.Ledecky shattered her previous world mark in the 400 free by 1.91 seconds, finishing Sundays final in 3:56.46 -- a time threshold that meant a lot for her because she had been chasing it (not just her previous world record of 3:58.37) for a couple of years now. Bruce Gemmel, the coach who has helped build her astonishing range at distances from the 100 to 1,500 meters, hung 3:56 out there for her a while ago, and it was one of the few things Ledecky hasnt done.British silver medalist Jazz Carlin finished 4.77 seconds behind Ledecky in 4:01.23, and Smith took the bronze in 4:01.92.All told, the U.S. grabbed five medals Sunday on a terrific night of swimming in which four world records were broken at the Olympics Aquatics Centre.Cody Miller took a bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke that Britains Andy Peaty won in world-record time, American Dana Vollmers comeback was rewarded with a bronze in the 100 butterfly in which Swedens Sarah Sjostrom broke the world record, and the American mens?4x100-meter relay pulled off an emotional win against France and Australia in world-record time, giving Michael Phelps his 19th career gold medal. Walt Hazzard Jersey. It was a great night for Team USA, Ledecky said. Were rolling and excited for the rest of the week.Ledecky is among the believers that success can be contagious for a swim team when it gets to a big event like this. She was only 15 when she won a gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle at the London Games four years ago, and she spent most of her time cheering for the rest of the team because her final wasnt until the seventh day of the eight-day meet. Here in Rio, Ledecky said, the U.S. swimmers tried to get the team spirit going early by deciding to ring a cowbell every time one of its swimmers leaves their gathering spot in the warm-up pool to go to the starting blocks to race. Ledecky admits the bell is an acquired taste. When is Katie Ledeckys next race? Check out the complete scheduleI think its annoying some other teams, she said, breaking into a grin, but we have a really great team atmosphere. No wonder. Phelps meet is off to a strong start. With her win, Ledecky remains a legitimate contender to win six medals in all six of her events in Rio. Shes living up to her renown as arguably the most dominant athlete in the world. On Saturday, she won a silver anchoring the 4x100 freestyle relay, an unexpected honor that admittedly left her shaking as she waited to dive in for the final leg. She still has the 200 free and 800 free to go, plus two relays. (Shes also the current world-record holder in the 800 and 1,500, which isnt contested at the Olympics)So far, so good.Im looking forward to the challenge, Ledecky said. ' ' '
NEW YORK -- Derrick Rose knows he wont get a unanimous ovation from the United Center crowd on Friday, when he returns to the arena for the first time since being traded to the New York Knicks. Randy Moss Jersey .That would be a dream, but I know Im going to get some boos here and there, Rose said Wednesday night. Its all a part of the game, all a part of the sport. Its not going to affect the way that I play and how bad I want to win that game.Rose will play in Chicago for the first time as a visitor on Friday night, after spending his first seven NBA seasons as the face of the?Bulls?franchise. Teammate Joakim Noah will also be making his return to Chicago. And while Rose expects some boos, former teammate?Jimmy Butler?said he expects a standing ovation for both players -- and hell be one of those on his feet.Lots of love, I can promise you that, Butler said Thursday. Ill be standing when their name is called, too, because they did a lot for the city. On the floor, they did a lot, but I think they did even more off the floor. Thats what I commend them for.Rose, a native of the South Side of Chicago, said he has no ill feelings toward the organization as he prepares to head home.Theres no bad blood there at all, Rose said. I totally understand the business of this game, and yeah, theres no bad blood. I never felt that way about getting traded or me coming to this team. I always took it as a blessing that I had the opportunity to come in this market, this franchise, and to be able to create a culture here.Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg also expects a warm welcome for Rose.I think he should be received well, Hoiberg said. Derrick did a lot of good things for the franchise, for the city -- obviously, winning an MVP. He had some great moments, some big playoff series. I think hell be ?received very well.Rose was drafted by the Bulls?with the No. 1 overall pick out of Memphis in 2008 and was named rookie of the year that season. He was named NBA MVP after the 2010-11 campaign, the youngest player to win the award, and led the Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference during that regular season. But he hurt his knee for the first time in the playoffs the following season and had played in just 39 percent of possible games due to various injuries following the original injury.Earlier this week, Rose said that he approaches the game differently in New York than he did as a Bull. That was a young, raw talent, reckless type player. The player you see now, Im more mature, Rose told reporters. My IQ of the game has gotten higher. I dont have to do the things I did in the past with the team I have right now. Ill look crazy going out there shooting some of the shots I shot with the Bulls. Theres no need for that.Rose and the Knicks are off to a slow start thus far. New York is 1-3 and struggling to find cohesion on either end of the floor entering the game against Chicago. Rose is averaging 16 points, four rebounds and 2.5 assists over four games and is still trying to get comfortable with the offense after missing two weeks during the preseason to attend a civil trial in Los Angeles.Weve got to figure this out, Rose said after the Knicks 19-point loss to the?Houston Rockets?on Wednesday. Were trying to get better every day. Thats our approach to every game and practice, but it takes time. Were building a culture here, and it takes time.-- ESPNs Jeff Goodman contributed to this report. Roger Craig Jersey . Calgary scored on the first shift, and Michael Cammalleri scored twice as the Flames cruised to a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Gino Cappelletti Jersey .S District Court against Major League Baseball, the Office of the Commissioner and his own union, the MLBPA. . Louis. To which I would say two things: 1. Where there is smoke, there is or perhaps has been a little fire. Or, in other words, the two teams would appear to have at least spoken. And spoken is defined as one calling the other to inquire, no more, no less. LOS ANGELES -- Bud Norris pitched six strong innings while filling in for Clayton Kershaw in his Dodgers debut, Adrian Gonzalez drove in two runs and Los Angeles beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Friday night.Acquired from Atlanta on Thursday, Norris (4-7) overpowered Colorado from the start, striking out seven of the first 14 hitters. The right-hander held the Rockies to a single and a double, and finished with eight strikeouts.Colorado got a runner to second only twice against Norris. The closest the Rockies came to scoring against him may have been a fifth-inning fly ball hit by Brandon Barnes that Dodgers center fielder Trace Thompson caught against the wall. Matt Light Jersey. Adam Liberatore, Louis Coleman, Joe Blanton and Pedro Baez completed the shutout as the Dodgers won their third straight.Jorge de la Rosa (5-5) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings. ' ' '
